2022 Season in Review
This year started off with rain, rain and more rain resulting in a late seeding season. Pea acres were down due to this, with fear of root rot and a delayed harvest. Despite the challenges, the crop still all made it in the ground!

We saw great success with Voraxor, a new pre-burn product from BASF, in front of peas. It provided extended control of many of our common broadleaf weeds, leaving fields weed free well into in-crop herbicide application timing.

Flea beetle pressure was high again this year, affecting canola from cotyledon until late vegetative stages. We also saw a couple incidents of cutworms early in the season.

A few insecticide applications were made in peas, due to high levels of pea aphids. This is common in years when seeding is delayed. Luckily, not all fields had to be sprayed due to the presence of lady bugs – beneficial insects for the win!! We also saw evidence of pea leaf weevil, identified by notches along the leaf edges. This is caused by adult weevil feeding, which is not economical in itself, but potential larvae feeding on the nodules below ground is. Management strategies are not recommended at this stage, as feeding was minimal, but it is something to keep monitoring in future seasons.

For the most part, Mother Nature cooperated, and everyone was able to get the crop off! All in all, yields were good especially in areas with less moisture stress. There were higher disease incidence levels in canola, including blackleg, verticillium stripe and sclerotinia stem rot. Disease management will be something to keep in mind for future seasons, especially if conditions remain wet.

We were able to expand this year, with an office addition this past winter and a new seed shed this fall. We are excited to better serve our customers with these new additions.

The team here at Prairie Giants Crop Supply would like to thank everyone for their support this past year. We are extra thankful this year, as we celebrate our 10-year anniversary in 2023. Stay tuned for all the exciting things we have planned this upcoming year!!
